THE IMPOSSIBLE HAS BECOME POSSIBLE, HISTORY OF WOMEN’S FOOTBALL IS WRITTEN | SERBIA BEAT GERMANY, MULTIPLE EUROPEAN AND WORLD CHAMPION, AT THE THRESHOLD OF THE WORLD CUP PLAY-OFF QUALIFICATION (VIDEO)

So, the impossible has become possible, the dream has come true, and the women’s football world admires Serbia. Our best national team managed to win Germany – 3:2 (1:0), in the match that will remain written in golden letters in the history of women’s football. With three new points, players led by the head-coach Predrag Grozdanović came a step closer to the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023 play-off qualifications.

Serbia bravely entered the match; our girls played a high pressure and surprised German ladies who had to defend themselves in those first minutes of the match. Also, there were situations when the guest team threw the ball from the goal line and luck was on their side with Serbia not taking the lead so early on. The multiple world and European champion did not expect such an aggressive Serbia team and were really impressed by the approach of our girls. On the other hand, German team also demonstrated their strength, showing why they are one of the best teams in the world.

In the moments of uncertainty in front of our goal, goalpost and crossbar were our allies. A lot of things happened in the first 45 minutes of the game, a lot of running, aggression, great passes and goal opportunities. And the goal. It was 36. minute when, like Aleksandar Mitrović in Lisbon, Alegra Poljak waited for a cross on the second post and defeated Merle Frohms with a header. It led to eruption of joy at the stands of the FA of Serbia Sports Centre in Stara Pazova. A goal of truth, a goal of great hope, a goal that brings Serbia closed to the play-off qualifications for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023.

The second half was similar to the first one, and in 49. minute Jovana Damnjanović doubled the advantage of Serbia and hinted at a great sensation. But that would be a sensation only for the uninformed, because that match with Germany showed how much women’s football in Serbia is expanding. Knowledge, quality, but now also power, both technical and tactical, were at display on the pitch in Stara Pazova. There were also a lot of emotions, because that was the day that would remain inscribed in the history of women’s football. Two goals advantage against Germany does not happen every day. We kept it like that till 60. minute, when the guest team demonstrated their strength and managed to score, thus reducing the lead. It was necessary to endure, especially since Serbia entered the match significantly weaker, without several important players. Head-Coach Predrag Gvozdenović did not want to use any excuses, on the contrary -we were looking for a goal that would put the German team in a big problem.

They probably could not remember the time when they conceded three goals in less than 70 minutes of a match in one qualification. And Serbia did it in 69. minute, and it was the great Jovana Damnjanović again. She endured a duel with a few opposing players and shot the ball over Merle Frohms. That was when the impossible became possible and the dream came true.

Germany managed to soften the blow by the end of the match, but history was written. Serbia 3 – Germany 2 will remain inscribed. Well done, girls!
